Will asked, “Does this hurt, getting ‘lit up’?”

Charlie answered, “No, Grandpa. I’ve done it before, it don’t hurt at all.”

Morning Flower and Nikki were whispering. Nikki whipped out her comm and made a call. “Dee, can you take off work for a few minutes? Grab all the garlic you can buy, and bring it to John’s. Thanks.”

John sat there, looking amused. “Don’t you have a job for me, Bob?”

“We’re sending a party to an unknown planet. Anything you think they need to take?”

“A couple of large bore rifles might not be a bad idea. Other than that, not really.”

“I’ll have Topper get my 45-70 out of the safe while he’s over there anyway. You got something they could take?”

“I’ve got that 350 Legend upper I bought for hogs. I’ll stick it on one of my lowers, should be good enough.”

Charlie and I headed to the barn. I commed Topper about getting my rifle. Once I had Charlie lit up, I got to thinking. Something Topper had said. I commed Max. “How’s it going, Quickdraw?”

“Just horsin’ around, Bob.”

“Dang, you’ve been hitting that culture pack hard. Learning much?”

“Ruby and her bunch don’t look to be up to much, but I think we should probably keep an eye on them for a few weeks, just to be sure. The way the container is sitting, I think we can get to it with the freighter without cutting any trees. Probably need Nikki on the stick to get it done, though.”

“You about to head back?”

“Yes. You need something?”

“Could you divert over southern Nevada, and see if you see any Galactic tech readings? I’m curious if they really have anything at Area 51.”

“I’ll do a long distance pass, but if they do have anything, I may have to divert to the Moon again.”

“Just don’t try to mate with a radar dish this time.”

“I’ll try and remember that, asshole.”

“Later, then.”

“Later, Bob.”

By the time Charlie was done, Topper was back with the saucer. Charlie went aboard, trying to match up what he now knew with what he saw. He came back out amazed. “Mr. Wilson, I understand how to fly that thing now. Dang, I wish I had that machine for fractions.”

Will came into the barn, with Max and John trailing after. He said, “When do we get going?”

“The guest of honor has yet to make an appearance, and you’ve got vital supplies coming in from town.”

“Vital supplies?”

“All the garlic that wasn’t nailed down.”

He laughed. “That would be important, going to a planet full of Squatches. Wonder if it will grow there?”

“You better find out. You could be the king of the garlic business.”

“You might have something there, Bob. Our faces are gonna be in every Post Office in the country by the end of the week. We might be better off, going to live with the Starfoot.”

“I’d imagine you could make good money blacksmithing. Can’t be any fun getting sparks in your fur.”

“That’s an idea. We could trade metal goods for all sorts of things. Do we
